London: Rider & Co., 1955. Second Impression. Hardcover. Octavo. Blue cloth with black spine titles. In original dust jacket. 232 pages, b/w plates. Former owner's bookplate to front pastedown, booksellers ticket to free endpaper. A folded hand-written 'letter' is included indicating that the author may have misinterpreted one of the masonic rituals mentioned in the book. A very good or better copy in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket.

Touted as the first fully documented account ever written of the secret rites of what is commonly called the Black Mass. The author shows how the 'rite and idea of Satan' has its origin in primitive myth, and then traces its evolution through the Manicheans, Cathars, the witch cult and the Templars down to the seventeenth century, when it was caught up in a viscious crime wave, and then to the eighteenth century when it became the monstrous plaything of rakes and dandies in England.
