OUR LADIES OF DARKNESS. Feminine Daemonology in Male Gothic Fiction by Joseph Andriano (1993)

20.00

University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. Black cloth with silver spine titles. 182pp. Near fine in like dust jacket.

The author examines fifteen texts that deal with female hauntings. These include Poe's "Ligeia," Hoffman’s "The Sandman," Irving's "The Adventures of a German Student," Cazotte's "Le Diable amoreaux," Aickman's "Ravissante," and others. Andriano uses a quote by Nathaniel Hawthorne to base these examinations on: "What if the fiend should come in women's garments, with a pale beauty amid sin and desolation, and lie down by your side?"
