MANDAIC INCANTATION TEXTS by Edwin M. Yamauchi

100.00

New Haven: American Oriental Society, 1967. First Edition. Quarto. Hardcover. Green cloth with gilt titles to front and spine. Text presented in typescript form. 422 pages. Browning to cloth, small ding to upper edge of front board, very light corner bumps. A very good copy.

A remarkable work on the magical and religious writings of the Mandaeans, a religious community from the areas of southern Iraq and Iran. They are considered to be the sole surviving sect of the gnostic tradition. The religious and magical texts are written in Mandaic - an eastern Aramaic dialect akin to the Aramaic used in the Babylonian Talmud. The religious texts are written on manuscripts dating for the most part to medieval times. The magical bowl texts included here are the earliest of Mandaic writings and date from the Sasanian era, about 600 A.D. The lengthy introduction is followed by the texts with their initial translation from Mandaic into Hebrew with English translation on facing pages.
