First published in 1835, this is Grimm’s exhaustive work on Germanic mythology and the occult practices and beliefs of the ancient Germanic peoples. Included is an extensive study of the Teutonic deities, but Grimm also examines, in great detail, the totality of Germanic religious experience, from the creation narratives of the Prose Edda to the superstitions, spells, and charms of the German peasant, and much more. Volume 1 focusses mainly on the gods and goddesses of the Teutonic pantheon Thor (Thunan), Wodan, Odin, Fro, Loki, Holda, Zisa, Herodius, Frikka, and more, including noted Heroes and Wise Women. Volume 2 continues with chapters on Wights and Elves, Giants, Creation Myths, Trees and Animals, the Sky and Stars, Summer and Winter and the festivals involved with each, the concept of Time, the Soul, Death, and more. The third volume starts with a translation of Grimm’s preface to the second (German) edition. Volume 3 deals mainly with Magic and Witchcraft, including spells and charms, with additional lengthy chapters on the Devil, Spectres, Herbs and Stones, Sicknesses, Superstitions and Omens, and more. Volume 4 contains two parts: a Supplement, collected from the Author’s notes by Prof. E. H. Meyer; and an Appendix by the author, which includes Anglo-Saxon Genealogies, and a lengthy presentation of additional Superstitions and Spells.
