English title: The Magic Door of Rome, Symbol of Western Alchemy
Florence: Leo S. Olschki, [2015]. New Edition. Softcover with French flaps. Large octavo. 234pp. Illustrated throughout in b&w with color plate section at end of volume. A fine copy.
An analysis of the importance of alchemy in Italy which is based on a peculiar monument of exceptional importance, located in Central Rome on the grounds of an ancient temple. The small but mysterious monument is unique in its complex symbolic message, the fascination conveyed by its history, and the original personality of its creator, Marquis Massimiliano Palombara, who had it erected in 1680. Curious and bizarre considerations have been written about the work and its creator since the early nineteenth century, and only since the 1980s have several scholars begun more thorough and rigorous investigations to better evaluate and understand the monument's meaning and value. Mino Gabriele's book now follows this new line of analysis. Thanks to its subtle syncretism, the refined philosophical and alchemical conception that informs it, and the symbols carved upon it, the Magic Door remains an enigmatic presence, a mysterious suggestion that silently questions the intelligence of those who view it.
