By far the most informative work on the Devadasi cult, with an emphasis on the temple and cult of Jagannatha at Puri in Orissa. Close to 1500 people perform ritual duties at this temple, all of whom are males except for a small group of women known as devadasis (literally: female servants of the deity) or temple dancers. This study illuminates not only the meaning of the institution of the devadasis but also throws new light on Hindu women, kinship and kingship, and certain aspects of Bhakti and Tantra. Though a number of temple rituals are discussed and analyzed, one of the most striking features of this work is the translation of a manuscript that Marglin was able to track down, which is a secret sakta ritual of Goddess Kali, that covers every detail of tantric worship including the 5 M's (pancha makara), and the mingling of sexual fluids for consumption by the participants. The ritual is long and complex but it is presented step by step and leaves nothing hidden. A superb reference work for not only the Devadasi cult but also for the tantric worship of Kali, the Dasa Mahavidyas, and more.
