Edited with an introduction and notes by Arthur Beatty
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. Reprint. Hardcover. 16mo. 211pp. Brown cloth with gilt titles to front. Spine has black text . Former owner's names on front pastedown. A handsome little volume. In very good condition.
The text of this edition is a word for word reprint of the Confessions as it first appeared (anonymously) in the London Magazine for September and October of 1821, and December, 1822. It was first released in book form in 1822 and again in a revised edition in 1856. This is De Quincey’s classic autobiographical account about his addiction to laudanum (opium and alcohol) and the effect it had on his life. The Confessions was the first major work De Quincey published and the one which won him fame almost overnight.
