London: Chapman and Hall, 1874. First Edition. Octavo. Bound in calf with gilt rules to boards, gilt-tooled spine with six compartments with titles to black leather label. Binding by Stokers and Son, London. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. xxi + 524 pp. Black and white illustrations. An extremely rare volume. OCLC locates only two copies worldwide. Corner and edgewear, rubbing to the binding, wear to top of spine The three color lithographs called for in the list of illustrations are not present here. Former owner's gift inscription. A different former owner used his small rubber stamp on title page, many text pages (mostly in the margins) and on most plates (not affecting images).

Skertchly was an entomologist and while in Ghana and Dahomey it was his intention to collect zoological specimens though circumstances prevented him from gathering much. Instead, he was detained by the King of Dahomey (he refers to it as a polite imprisonment). During his detainment he was allowed to observe the customs, manners, and rituals of the Fon, including information on sacrifice, fetishes and the practices of Vodun.
