[CROWLEY, Aleister] The Vision & The Voice. Limited to 80 Copies [See Condition Notes]
With color artwork by Paul Klee; additional material by Dr. John Dee and Sir Edward Kelly
No place: The 100th Monkey Press, 2019. First Edition Thus. Softcovers. Octavo. 3 separate books, each with decorative covers and string-ties, housed in a wooden box with Dee's Sigillum Dei Aemeth diagram stamped on top of box (see condition notes below). Limited to 80 hand-numbered sets, this being No. 18. Also included, attached inside the box, is a length of white ribbon with a piece of ebony (?) attached. This is used to help raise the books from the box in order to remove them easily. The first two volumes of this set are bound in a color patterned material (glued-up acid free paper and cloth) with blue slats of wood holding the text block, with string ties. These 2 volumes contain Crowley's text of all 30 Calls of the Aire or Aethyr. Each of the chapter pages feature red ink for chapter title, plus stylized caps and device in b&w. At the beginning of each of the Calls are opaque sheets, each featuring a work of art (in color) by Paul Klee. The third volume has a slightly different look with a brown textured cover (with French flaps) in a sort of leafy pattern, also with string ties. This volume is called: A Brief Abstract of the Symbolic Representation of the Universe Derived by Doctor Dee Through the Skrying of Sir Edward Kelly (44pp), with ten 'plates' featuring sigils, seals and tables. All volumes printed on acid-free, 24 lb. Neenah Classic Laid paper, with all text set in Nyala font. Laid in are two 100th Monkey bookmarks, plus a blank ex-libris label showing Dee's Sigillum Dei Aemeth diagram. All three books are in fine condition. NOTE: The wooden box that houses the three volumes is damaged, with a large dent in the top also resulting in a vertcal crack in the wood which runs the length of the box. The box still closes with it's clasp but I am grading it as being in good condition only (see photos). Regardless, this remains a very elusive title from 100th Monkey Press and the price here has been adjusted coniderably lower because of the box damage.
This is Crowley’s classic account of his exploration of the 30 Enochian Aethyrs which were first developed by John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 16th century. Crowley’s two main workings took place in Mexico in 1900 and also in Algeria in 1909. Victor Neuburg accompanied Crowley into the desert for the workings in Algeria. An extremely important Thelemic text. The additional volume includes a lot of supplemental info on the Enochian names, numbers, and more.
This copy is from the collection of Thelemic author Robert C. Stein (1931 – 2024), who wrote "The Mystery of the Letters and The Tree of Life" and other works. Stein was a Professor Emeritus of Biology in the New York State University System, whose involvement in the study and practice of Thelema spanned three decades and travels in five continents.
