[CROWLEY, Aleister] The Book of the Law [technically called LIBER AL VEL LEGIS, SUB FIGURA CCXX AS DELIVERED BY XCIII = 418 TO DCLXVI] (O.T.O. 1938, 1st Edition)
London: Privately Issued by the O.T.O., 1938. First Edition Thus (first separate edition). Bound in white card wrappers (originally with 2 staples but staples no longer present). 6.5 x 5 inches. 50 pages, plus ads and statements at end of volume. With typeset text of the Book of the Law followed by the 'Tunis' comment. Additional pages at the end of the book include an ad for The Equinox of the Gods with detachable order form, Crowley's offer to train aspirants, an ad for Magick in Theory and Practice, Life and Liberty statement, and Freedom statement. All contents complete. Some mild edge wear, a bit of light soiling to back cover. A very good copy.
This is the first separate publication of the typeset text of The Book of the Law. It was issued in two states; the first state (offered here) has a misprint in Chapter 1, verse 32 which has the words "heart and tongue" reversed to read "tongue and heart." This was corrected in the second state, which was released in red buckram. This O.T.O. edition was published shortly after The Equinox of the Gods. By making available this small, separate edition, Crowley felt that this was the best way to get his 'Law' into the hands of as many people as possible.
This copy is from the collection of Thelemic author Robert C. Stein (1931 – 2024), who wrote "The Mystery of the Letters and The Tree of Life" and other works. Stein was a Professor Emeritus of Biology in the New York State University System, whose involvement in the study and practice of Thelema spanned three decades and travels in five continents.
