As the Latin title implies, Tyrocinium [or Tirocinium] Chymicum should better be subtitled an apprenticeship in Chemistry, and as such, a prerequisite to further study. The substances described herein, many whose names have survived to the beginning of the Twentieth Century, are the staples of an Alchemical laboratory: substances used by Adepts and “Puffers” alike. This volume represents nicely the state of chemical knowledge prevalent in the Seventeenth Century. It is a historical curiosity which should be accepted as such and in this light the publishers do not recommend that any of the substances listed as medical remedies be used as suggested. Many may have been used in the history of Medicine, but many are down-right poisonous to the point of being fatal.
