Vaughan was one of the greatest of all Western alchemists in the seventeenth century. He was considered a Spiritual Alchemist, for whom chemical experiment and mystic disciplines went together and neither could be successful without the other. Tantric and Yogic works are full of warnings of the dangers of unguided autonomic nervous system experiments. Apparently these experiments eventually killed both Thomas Vaughan and his wife. His writings are not only an inspiration; they are also a warning. The sexual techniques of Alchemy are enveloped in great obscurity. Vaughan and his wife, his soror mystica, wrapped in entranced embrace, are the clearest key to this mystery in Western writings on Alchemy. All of Vaughan’s writings are included here.
