MAGIKA HIERA: Ancient Greek Magic & Religion Edited by Christopher Faraone and Dirk Obbink

100.00

New York/Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1991. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. Bound in black cloth with silver titles to spine. 298 pages. Some light pencil markings along side of a few paragraphs. These are easily erasable if desired, though they are quite unobtrusive. Otherwise, a fine copy in a fine, pictorial dust jacket.

This is a collection of ten well-researched essays by leading American and European scholars. The essays challenge the tendency among scholars of the Greek religion to ignore what have traditionally been called "magical" practices in ancient Greece. The volume covers the four major divisions of magical ritual - curses, protective magic, erotic spells, and prognostication, as well as a number of additional areas. Contributors included Hans Dieter Betz, Fritz Graf, John Scarborough, Samuel Eitrem, C.R. Phillips, Chrostopher A. Faraone, J.H.M. Strubble, H.S. Versnel, Roy Kotansky, John Winkler, and C.R. Phillips III.
