This is Thorndike’s classic work. It was originally published in separate parts between 1923 and 1958. The original aim of this work was to treat and document the history of magic, alchemy and experimental science (including medical experimentation) during the first thirteen centuries of our era. This is covered within the first two volumes. The remaining volumes cover the 14th through 17th centuries (Vols 3 & 4: fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Vols 5 & 6: sixteenth century, Vols 7 & 8: seventeenth century). Magic is understood under the broadest sense of the work, as including all occult arts and sciences, superstitions and folklore. The author believes that magic and experimental science have been connected in their development, and within these pages he has attempted to prove the same. The amount of information included is staggering with detailed notes referring to original sources throughout. There is a 169 page index to all volumes at the end of volume 8. A superb and unsurpassed reference work.
