THE MASK OF CTHULHU by August Derleth (Ballantine, 1976)

Ballantine , 1976. Reprint. 25095. Devil-head colophon. Mass market paperback. Published by arrangement with Arkham House. Cover art by Murray Tinkelman. Near fine. This is a collection of five novellas and one short story by Derleth. Contents are: ‘The Return of Hastur’, The Whippoorwills in the Hills’, ‘Something in Wood’, ’The Sandwin Compact’, ‘The House in the Valley’, and ‘The Seal of R’lyeh’. These stories continue the narrative of the Cthulhu Mythos originally brought into being by the fertile creative imagination of that late great master of the macabre, H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft himself suggested the theme of ‘The Return to Hastur’ shortly before his untimely death in 1937. With the publication of ‘The Lurker in the Threshold’ in 1945, it was patent that themes and concepts of the Lovecraft Mythos had fallen into able hands. It is evident that August Derleth, who by this time had already revealed his creative talents in other fields, is fully capable of adding to the Cthulhu Mythos in a vein and a manner which would certainly have won Lovecraft’s approval.
