First published in 1934, this is Thompson's classic work which was one of the first volumes solely dedicated to the mandragora. He traces its legends, mythology and usage throughout history beginning with the Hebrews, ancient Egyptians, ancient Greeks, China, and elsewhere, with a large section on Europe. Additional chapters cover ceremonies in gathering mandrake, the mandrake and the gallows legend, its references in the medieval herbals, occult and medicinal properties, and more.
