[SEMPLE, Gavin] Zos-Kia: An Introductory Essay on the Art and Sorcery of Austin Osman Spare (Hardcover in Dust Jacket and Slipcase, limited to 39 Copies)

$595.00

London: Fulgur, 1995. First Edition Thus. Octavo. Bound in deep orange cloth with gilt titles to spine. With dust jacket and slipcase. This is one of 39 hand-numbered copies (this being No. 27) referred to as the 'Special Edition' and is signed by the author. The initial copies which were to be issued in an edition of 70 with gilt edges turned out to be problematic and were not sold by Fulgur. Instead they were turned over to the author for private distribution. This special edition of 39 copies was then produced without the gilt edges (using the same first edition sheets) and officially sold by the publisher. 52 pages. Illustrated with 8 color photographs of work by Spare, plus additional drawings and photographs in black and white. Also included is a hand-printed talisman that provides a focal point for the particular Familiar bound into the book, and a bookmark showing art by Spare on one side (both as issued). The dust jacket spine is very lightly faded and there is some rubbing and light handling wear to slipcase, otherwise book, jacket and slipcase are in fine condition. Now quite scarce in hardcover.

An excellent essay in which Spare's personal systems of sorcery are explored, clarified and augmented with judicious application of the artist's own words. Here are excerpts from Spare's last unpublished grimoire 'The Logomachy of Zos' alongside the early text of 'The Book of Pleasure', clearly demonstrating the strength and consistency of his vision through life. Semple explains the techniques of sorcery that imbued Spare's art with such power and demonstrates the methods by which these potentials are controlled and made manifest.
