No Place [UK]: No Publisher [Chthonios Books], No Date. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 97 pages, printed on rectos only. Bound in Maroon boards with gilt spine titles. Issued without dust jacket. With a black and white portrait of John Dee. It is believed that this volume was produced by Chthonios Books (probably 50 copies or less) especially for Herman Slater's Magickal Childe bookstore in New York. 'Magickal Childe' is printed at base of spine. There is a Chthonios Books sticker on rear pastedown. The quality of the 'printing' isn't the best - the sheets appearing to have been xeroxed from a copy of the original edition. Despite the rather cheap production values, this remains a very uncommon volume. A near fine copy.
The manuscript this was edited from was never officially published though 20 copies were printed in 1880. The work contains a collection of personal entries and observations made by Dee during the years 1595 to 1601. The diary provides insight into Dee's personal life, his relationships, his daily activities, and his interests. It also sheds light on the political and cultural climate of the time, as well as the scientific and philosophical debates that were taking place. Dee was a prominent figure during the Elizabethan era, known for his work as a mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and occultist.
