[DEE, Dr. John (attributed to)] Ordines Descendens of Dr. John Dee (First Edition of 200 Copies)
Described and Edited by Peter W. Mills
London: Privately Published, 2007. First Edition. Softcover. Large quarto (12 x 8.5 inches). Although unstated in the book itself, this edition was limited to 200 hand-numbered copies, this being No. 26. No text to spine. xviii + 79 pages. Decorative devices and vignettes to all text pages. Further illustrated with seals, sigils, tables and diagrams. Bump to corners, light edge and corner wear elsewhere. Some light sun fading across top of covers. A very good copy of this now scarce edition.
A grimoire allegedly based on material prepared by John Dee. It is presented as the long-lost grimoiric counterpart to Dee's well-known Enochian material and is said to deal with Demonic rather than Angelic forces. The editor states that the text itself is that of a previously unknown work by Dee, a printed version of which had been produced for Sir Francis Dashwood (Hellfire Club) in the eighteenth century by one Jeremiah Hobbs. Though the editor believes that the work is an authentic part of the Dee canon, there are no references to the work in any of the standard Dee scholarship, and no copies of the 'privately-printed edition' can be traced. Regardless of the origin of this work it is still a very interesting grimoire in the same style and tradition of Dee's Enochian work.
This copy is from the collection of Thelemic author Robert C. Stein (1931 – 2024), who wrote "The Mystery of the Letters and The Tree of Life" and other works. Stein was a Professor Emeritus of Biology in the New York State University System, whose involvement in the study and practice of Thelema spanned three decades and travels in five continents.
