Baike, James. A Century of Excavation in the Land of the Pharaohs. London: The Religious Tract Society, ND (circa 1930).

No edition stated. Presumed first edition. There is no date listed but most likely from the late 1920s. 8vo. Bound in navy cloth with gilt titles to spine. 252 pages. Illustrated with 32 full page black and white plates (including frontispiece). Presentation copy (not from author) from J.H. Dunbar (author of the work 'The Rock Pictures of Lower Nubia') to A.J. Arkell, British archaeologist and colonial administrator known for his work in the Sudan and Egypt. There is a small rectangular stamp on to the upper portion of the front pastedown which reads Antiquities Service Library (believed to be in Khartoum) which has been crossed out, with the word 'cancelled' written in ink directly below (no other library markings). Above the stamp it reads 'presented to' and below the stamp it says 'by' and then a large ink signature of J.H. Dunbar , lower on the page it reads 'to A.J. Arkell'. It is unlcear whether it was first presented to the library and then to Arkell, or if Arkell was somehow involved with the library. Book shows very light edge wear. A VERY GOOD COPY.

Baike has presented an excellent survey of the history of Egyptian archaeology starting with a brief mention of Napoleon's expedition in the late 18th century through the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in the 1920s. He discusses the French and Italian pioneers from the 19th century before concentrating on what he terms the 'modern' period. Chapter headings include: The Story of the Pioneers, Mariette and His Work, The Beginnings of the Modern Period, The Pyramids and Their Explorers, Work AMong the Temples, Buried Royalties, Tutankhamen and His Splendours, and Life. Arts, and Crafts in the Land of the Nile.
