One of the greatest intellectual achievements of the 20th century, and often considered the greatest single achievement ever accomplished in Egyptological textual studies. The 'Worterbuch', as it is affectionately known by Egyptologists, is a large German language dictionary of the Egyptian language which was originally published between 1926 and 1961. It is a comprehensive work encompassing 3000 years of linguistic history, including Old, Middle, and Late Egyptian as well as hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Classical Greco-Roman period. The dictionary, with the hieroglyphics and text originally done by hand, contains approximately 16,000 headwords in five main volumes, and five additional volumes of primary source references (plus glossary and index). It is therefore the largest and most complete printed dictionary of Ancient Egyptian in existence. A landmark work - unsurpassed and indispensable.

In Volume One of the 'Worterbuch' there is a Foreword (in German) of 9 pages which describes the history of the commissioning of the great project in 1897 by the Prussian Academy of Sciences and how the project proceeded after that. It took 29 years for the first 5 volumes (financed by John D. Rockefeller, Jr.) to be published. So prolonged are the labours of those who toil over ancient texts.
