Adams begins with a discussion of the advancement of Alchemy in Europe, followed by chapters on Roger Bacon, John Dee (2 chapters), William Lilly, the English Rosicrucians, and more. The second half of the book deals with the history of witchcraft in England and its eventual decline, plus a separate chapter on the Witches of Scotland and a history of the literature of witchcraft.
