An excellent early study of the practices connected with the mysteries of Voodoo in Haiti. Also, Jamaican Myalism and Obeah are differentiated in detail and fully analysed in the mutual antagonism of their esoteric functions and the baneful influence they have exercised on habits and morals even since the abolition of slavery. More than a quarter of a century of study and research are here supplemented by nearly six years spent in Jamaica. Valuable information was gathered by the author from personal observations in the least accessible parts of mountain and "bush" where witchcraft and superstition are most prevalent.
