Levi, Eliphas (translated, annotated and introduced by Arthur Edward Waite). TRANSCENDENTAL MAGIC: ITS DOCTRINE AND RITUAL. London: William Rider & Son, 1923.

New and revised edition including all the original engravings. Hardcover. Large 8vo. Maroon decorative cloth with gilt stylized borders and title to front, gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. 522 pages plus two page catalog at end (one page for Waite’s works, the other of Rider publications). Numerous black and white plates and illustrations. Considerable wear to cloth, rubbing, spotting, and old moisture stains. Internally the book fares much better: tight binding, clean pages, no markings. That being said, it remains a good copy only.

This is often considered to be Levi's finest work. Originally issued in French with the title: ‘Dogme et Ritual de la Haute Magien’ (1854-1856), the book consists of XXII chapters and is divided in two parts; the first covers Doctrine (theory), the second Ritual (practice). The work covers almost every aspect of Ritual Magic and Aleister Crowley based his own ‘Magick in Theory in Practice’ on the format and style of this work. Waite also provides a biographical preface. This is a classic work of occult literature.
