First Edition. Hardcover. octavo. 2 Volume set. Publisher’s blue cloth with gilt stamped image and titles to front. Gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt. Color frontispiece in each volume with tissue guards. 283, 374 pages. 211 full page plates and text illustrations. Numerous folding charts plus 4 folding maps at end of volume 2. Boards are rubbed and show heavy soiling with evidence of some color re-touch work (see photos). Browning to free endpapers. Some foxing, mainly on tissue guards to frontispieces. Bindings are still secure. Internally this remains a very good set, though a nice re-binding wouldn't hurt. Quite scarce in the first edition.

This remains the standard reference work for the tribal people of Borneo. The authors have provided an excellent record of the daily life, social systems, methods of warfare, crafts and decorative arts, practices relating to spiritual existence, plus information on myths, legends, and tribal stories, and much more. Dr. Hose made frequent trips to the interior of Borneo over many years. This work has never been surpassed.
