A fascinating look at the importance and use of human skulls throughout history. Henschen discusses how skulls have been venerated and worshipped; of their use as trophies and talismans; and of their function in art, magic, religion, and in pseudo-sciences such as phrenology. He traces the path by which the skull came to be associated with death and mortality, a concept that reached its fullest expression late in the Middle Ages when from the epidemics that ravaged Europe emerged the Dance of Death and the image of Death the Reaper.
