A reprint of this classic work by Champollion, first published in 1823. Champollion, often considered to be the founder and father of Egyptology, is best known as the decipherer of the Egyptian hieroglyphics. Here he approaches the mythological figures of ancient Egypt, each with an illustration by Dubois (a faithful friend of Champollion). Many of the illustrations are quite unusual and rarely seen elsewhere. The full scope of the work was never completed due to Champollion's untimely death in 1832. This resulted in numerous gods and goddesses such as Osiris and Isis not being present.

"I obtained, by the careful study of all the Egyptian monuments which I was able to examine, a very extensive series of hieroglyphic proper names of Egyptian deities, and the manuscripts on papyrus gave me the hieratic forms of these names which gave me important insights into the material of the Egyptian cult, which led me to determine the hierarchical rank of each of the divine characters represented on the monuments of Egypt. I am convinced of the lack of success with which we have hitherto applied to the representations of the gods, carved on the temples or painted on the crates of mummies, and the names of Egyptian divinities which the Greek and Latin authors have transmitted to us. This study will be partly recorded in the collection that I publish under the title Egyptian Pantheon" - Champollion, Precis du Systeme Hieroglyphique des Anciens Egyptiens, 1824 (Precis of the Hieroglyphic System of the Ancient Egyptians, 1824)
