THE MASTER THERION (Aleister CROWLEY)

Magick in Theory and Practice, Being Part III of Book 4.

[Paris]: Privately Published [Printed at the Lecram Press], [1929-1930]. First Edition, first issue. In four sections (volumes). Section 1 printed in 1929, the remaining sections likely printed in 1930. Quarto (measures 11 1/4” x 7 5/8”). Original salmon-colored wrappers with black title and unicursal hexagram in black to front. xxxii + 124, 123-206, 207-302, 303-438pp. Tipped-in full color plate (the lamen of the Master Therion) to section one, after contents page. Signs of the Grades sheet tipped-in between pages 374 and 375 in Section 4.

Original wrappers have some wear and rubbing, mostly to the front and back of section one, with some light soiling, and wear and some chipping to spine paper exposing the signatures at head and foot. There is also a small triangular corner piece missing to back cover of section 1 (see photos). Remaining volumes have some light edge wear and small chips to spine ends, with section 4 having a couple of clean tears and some extra spine wear. A few sporadic spots to pages, again, mostly in the first section. Bindings are sound but the paper wrappers are a bit fragile, as is usual with this edition. All in all a good to very good set of this scarce first issue.

Here we have the elusive first issue of Crowley’s magnum opus; an exceptional work issued in four parts. It provides a complete system of Ceremonial Magic as only The Master Therion could write it. It is here presented as Crowley originally intended and should be studied and meditated upon deeply so one can have the pleasure of struggling with it on its own terms before consulting later editions which include copious notes and commentaries that explain every little detail - leaving nothing to the magical imagination. Shortly after this first publication it was issued in two subscriber’s editions in which the same sheets for the first issue were trimmed down and bound into one hardcover volume.
