MAGIC LIBRARY OF SORCERY, THEURGY AND DIVINATION, etc., by Georg Conrad Horst (7 Volumes in German, Facsimile of the 1821 Edition)

150.00

HORST, Georg Conrad (with an introduction by Herbert KEMPF)

Zauber Bibliothek oder von Zauberei, Theurgie und Mantik, Zauberern, Hexen und Hexenprocessen, Damonen, Gespenstern und Geistererscheinungen (Magic Library of Sorcery, Theurgy and Divination, Wizards, Witches and Witchcraft, Demons, Ghosts and Apparitions)

Freiburg im Breisgau: Edition Ambra Aurum Verlag, 1979. Facsimile of Horst’s 1821 Edition. 7 Volume Set. Text in Old German. Hardcovers. Octavo. Each volume bound in shimmering dark red cloth with gilt device to front. Gilt spine titles. xii + 387, xii + 440, vi + 391, vi + 374, vi + 420, vi + 441, + 92 pages. Illustrations are included in a few of the volumes, mostly of sigils, magical seals and diagrams. Volume seven is a slim volume and seems to repeat the same alphabetical listings (over 90 pages) which are also included at the end of volume 6. Not sure why this is. All volumes housed in a cardboard slipcase.

Light bruise to upper spine area of volume VII, very light handling wear to all volumes. Cardboard slipcase is splitting at upper back seam but protects the books nicely. All in all a very good to near fine set.

Note: This is a very heavy set of books. Extra shipping costs may be required for Priority Mail in the U.S., and for overseas purchases.

A complete set of this massive German reference work covering all aspects of ceremonial magic with many grimoires reproduced in part and in full. Also covers witchcraft and other occult offshoots. In Germany, with the increased interest in folklore during the 19th century, many historians took an interest in magic and in grimoires. Several published extracts of such grimoires in their own books on the history of magic, thereby helping to further propagate them. This work by Horst (first published in 1821) was one of the more notable examples of magical research at the time. He considered grimoires to be a peculiarity of the Mediaeval mindset.
