This is Coomaraswamy’s classic work covering the many aspects and epochs of India’s artistic heritage beginning with the Pre-Maurya (Indo-Sumerian, Dravidian and Aryan, early Asiatic), through the Maurya Period, the beginnings of Hindu and Buddhist theistic art, the Gupta Period, and onward to the Medieval Period (Rajput painting, later arts and crafts and more). The work continues with coverage of Kashmir, Nepal, Tibet, Chinese Turkestan, and the Far East, followed by a chapter on Indonesia, Ceylon, Burma, Siam, Cambodia, Campa, Sumatra and Java. A detailed bibliography and appendices follow, plus descriptions of the plates and the plates themselves. An excellent reference work.
