Waite here examines what was purportedly a sensational hoax perpetrated by Parisian journalist, Leo Taxil (Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès). Taxil and a fictitious associate, Diana Vaughan (said to have been a descendent of the alchemist Thomas Vaughan), created a scandal in the late 1800s by reporting on a most heinous occult sect, the Palladian Masons, that admitted women and performed diabolic acts of “Luciferian Spiritism.” Taxil’s descriptions of these acts and their supposed links to Freemasonry and other organizations, created a public hysteria and outcry against all things occult, especially secret societies. A.E. Waite took on this hoax and published this volume. Here he breaks down all the sensationalism brought on by Taxil and a clearer picture begins to develop. This work, along with similar refutations by French occultist Papus, raised questions Taxil could not answer, and Taxil eventually admitted that the reports were a hoax meant to ridicule both the Catholic Church and Freemasonry. Arthur Edward Waite (October 2, 1857 - May 19, 1942) was an occultist and co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Born in the United States, and raised in England, A.E. Waite joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1891 and also entered the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia in 1902.
